Gambling has become more popular in the past dozen years, a rapid progression. It is an industry that brings in $13 billion dollars a year. Gambling includes: Internet gambling, casinos, pull tabs, scratch tickets, lottery, poker, and VLTs (video lottery terminals). There are advantages and disadvantages that gambling has on communities.
Advantages of gambling on society are that it generates revenue for the government, deficit reduction, job creation, expands economy, increases tourism, supported by Aboriginal communities, and an increase in prevention programs in various types of addiction, compulsive gambling included.
There are many disadvantages to gambling which include compulsive gambling, individual damage, family damage, and community damage, compulsive gambling can lead to bankruptcy, and cause mental health problems for example; anxiety, stress, and depression, job loss, unemployment, neglect issues, family feuds, break-ups, substance abuse, and suicide.
Gambling is a game playing with probabilities. It can not be predicted what the outcome will be. The odds are against you. Gambling is a chance! These games of chance would include VLTs, bingo, slot machines, and the lottery. Skill games are games of chance but more skill is required when betting or wagering. Games of skill would be poker, horse races, and professional sports betting.
Maladaptive gambling behavior that disrupts personal, family , or vocational pursuits is considered compulsive gambling. Individuals may be preoccupied with gambling. Pathological gamblers say that they are seeking an aroused, euphoric state that gambling gives them, which appears more exhilarating than the money.
What causes compulsive gambling? Thinking they are going to win; a gambler is willing to invest that there is a possibility and a hope that they will win; getting out with friends; satisfaction; people like spending money to play; starts to become a habit; passes the time; and lack of education, people do not know how the odds are against them.
