Engaging question as a hypnotherapist practicing hypnotherapy I have a different view on this than others could have.

First off permit me to say I practice it and it works for me! Asserting that I’m an NLP Master Practitioner and Hypnotherapist so I do tons of work on my self in alternate ways to improve my life and positive thinking is just one facet of it.

When referring to my clients well I have got to say that positive thinking just doesn’t work the way that my clients have used it, allow me to explain. The clients I see have Problems along the line of depression, anxiety, anger, loneliness, low self esteem and other stuff whatever reson why they come to see me for these make up the main parts of their problem.

Usually at some particular point in the past they’ve been introduced to positive thinking to help with their problems either by them-self or other health practitioners. The issue appears as they practice this they still have the same issues as before and they are still doing in their head what hey have always done to create the depression, anxiety etc. While the new positive thinking is a conscious effort the old issues are a unconscious process which has been going for decades normally.

So what I find happens with them is they make a new trance or state on top of the old one, at last it becomes unconscious process as well with time. A way to think about it is well imagine that we are like an onion and we have layers to us, the old problems are a handful of layers of the onion towards the middle while the new positive layer is a new layer of the onion on the outside that sits on top of all of the old stuff.

So when I see clients I’ll ask them stuff like how do you feel about the past, future, your partner, youngsters , parents, and yourself to name a few. Recalling they came for a difficulty that is causing them a lot of discomfort. They will say stuff like, I am happy, everything is good, my relationship is great. As they say these answers I am able to see they are lying not at a conscious level because consciously they kind of believe this, its like they’ve a split personality when they give positive answers this is due to the fact that that’s what you should think and say on one hand! While on the other hand simultaneously they know they’re unhappy, they are effectively in 2 minds. We all pick up on this all the time when some one tells us something and we do not believe it, they are saying one thing consciously while at the same time they are saying subconsciously through body language something else. This is what I’m picking up on when they are lying to me.

In this situation the positive thinking doesn’t work because it creates ambiguity! From one perspective the person is sad and on the other they are saying they are not and it complicates the process of helping them. I need to know how they feel about their life, so I know exactly what we need to address so I can help them but they on one had say they are depressed and then on the other answer all the other questions as if they have no issues while at a unconscious level they’re sending a totally different message.

Now what I think these clients are doing is utilizing the positive thinking in a way to try to hide from their Problems, like people use drugs, alcohol, food for example. Also a main part to positive thinking is you have got to manifest positive feelings with the thoughts!! If you do not well it will never works irrespective of how much you do it! Eventually positive thinking needs to result in positive feelings. I believe that’s the thing they do when they’re using positive thinking they’re manifesting depression, anxiety, or negative feelings with the thoughts instead of positive feelings.

Another part of this is I think they also have to do the work to release all of the self-destructive thoughts, beliefs and especially emotions they have stored in their body/mind. Once this is done I think positive thinking can work, because they will then be able to manifest positive feelings to go with the practice. As for individuals that are not suffering from any real negative feelings impacting their life, I have no idea how it operates for them. Although I’ll guess that if they manifest positive feelings in the process then it should work for them too. I’ve only really addressed issues I’ve found with my clients.

So I believe that positive thinking generally does not work for the great majority of people and could be a waste of time. The reason Why I say this Is often because most people don’t know the way to do positive thinking and they do not have any real guidance on the way to use it. Most of the people I know who’ve suggested this as a practice to my clients don’t practice it them self, so what does this say for the practice of positive thinking?

Many people think that all their issues started from 1 or 2 particular events that occurred to them during the past, they point to them and say that’s the reason why I am the way In which I am it’s not my fault. These events can range from stuff like rape, molestation, physical abuse, beaten and so on. The people then will manifest anxiety, panic attacks, depression etc and may try to deal with them by utilizing drugs, alcohol or other un-useful behaviours. As a hypnotherapist and doing hypnotherapy with clients this is a vital thing to understand and understand.

So is it important when all the issues started at that event during the past? For instance folk suffer from depression, anxious, low self worth, hate self etc and make many lasting choices about them self, when these types of events occur. For instance they may believe they are unlovable, you deserved it, you don’t deserve to be content for example.

So is it important? Well No and Yes. The event it self isn’t critical because that event is over and done with, it won’t ever change irrespective of what we do. Even if it probably did matter we don’t have a time machine to go back in time to mend it! Also lets face it the people that have these issues are not being abused or hurt in anyway today, that’s anther reason that explains why those events don?t matter. The single thing that actually matters about those events is how the person felt at that point and what choices they made.

Lets face it we have many memories most we cannot remember like work, the experience of work is fairly bland the same experience typically day in day out, so we find it hard to remember what we probably did 2 days ago in any detail. While other memories stand out in our memory, we think of them easily and they can have occurred 30 years ago but the memory is fresh and feels like it happened only a week gone. So whats going on with these memories? Well they usually have a lot of emotions attached to them! Either negative or positive and it is the emotion that keeps it fresh in our memories and keeps us recalling it easily.

So most clients I see have no issue with the memories that are positive, they’re actually content about them however when it comes to the bad ones they loathe them and think of them all the time. This is because the emotion draws there attention like a big fire on a hill it is easy to see.

Now the thing is you store all your emotions in your body, these feelings are attached to memories so when you return to a memory and think about it you re-experience the emotions you had the 1st time. Each time you go over a memory you add a touch more of the same feelings to the memory, so in time you can amp up the strength of the emotions attached to those memories, adding more layers of those feelings.

Also behaviours can be anchored or attached to these feelings too , so when people think about that memory they have that feeling and they then do that behavior what ever it could be. The feelings bind the whole sequence together very firmly! So that memory isn’t actually the issue it’s the way they keep thinking about that memory today and recreating the emotions in side that memory today. Then also doing any of the behaviors triggered from this memory today that they are doing today, in their own head that’s what the most pressing issue it is not what occurred 30 years ago.

So if this is true then the event must matter!! Well no it doesn’t actually remember you cannot change the event in any way the trick here is you can change how you feel about the memory. Imagine if one was to remove all the destructive emotions from that memory or event what would occur? Well typically what occurs is you get your client to go back in to the memory, and they feel absolutely nothing. They don’t have any feelings about the event either way no matter what occurred. I have had 1 or 2 experiences where I have treated women who’ve been raped! And they are absolutely in a mess before they came and saw me then after I have worked with them. Now I ask them to return to the memory or the rape and they burst out laughing! It’s a little weird the 1st time, but a good thing! They saw that event in a completely different way, realising that the event had nothing whatsoever to do with them, it wasn’t even about them and they felt sad for the guy involved.

When you do this kind of work then have these results, any behaviors or feelings that people have today attached to that. Memory they just disappear totally from their life as the emotions were the trigger.

So eventually the answer to the issue is, no the traumatic events don’t matter at all only how you felt when it occurred does and what decisions you made at that time is all that matters. When working with clients like this you can even operate content free meaning you don’t need to know what occurred all you need to know is how the person felt at that event.

NLP stands for N – Neuro (neurological processes), L – Linguistic (language), P – Programming (behavioural patterns that have been learned thru experience)

NLP is a way methodology or approach to studying how individuals do what they do in their mind and modelling that individuals excellence, so it can be copied and then teach it to others through diverse methodologies that come out of the modelling process. Meaning it’s the study of structure of subjective experience. Two examples of where this is of use is quit smoking hypnosis, bing eating or somebody doing drugs. After you have studied how people do this, you may then infer how others do the same roughly, as an example the majority of these behaviors will involve feeling negative emotions that can trigger the behavior, eliminating the emotions will take away the trigger and therefor the behavior in most cases.

To further explain this with an example in the beginning Richard Bandler decided to work out how to help people who suffer from a phobia! So he commenced advertising in the paper asking for individuals to contact him who have had a phobia, which they also got over it and do not have it anymore. This collected to Richard many people who had assorted differing types of phobia and he relates how all of these people told him approximately the same thing thing.

Richard said to them well you had a phobia, so how did you get over it? And all of them said roughly the same thing. It usually started with them saying, “after years and years of this I got sick and tired of it, thats it I cant take it anymore” that was the straw that broke the camels back. They then claimed “I looked at myself and saw how foolish it was to be fearful having a look at myself from across the room”.

So what they actually did was disassociated from the image in their mind that means rather than seeing thru their own eyes, you see your self in the image essentially stepping out of the movie and watching it from a far. Through doing this you can’t feel how you used to about the situation and the behavior disappears.

So once this information was gathered a technique was developed to replicate what these individuals did, then it was applied to individuals who had a phobia! What we do is teaching the subconscious of these people how to change the way they think to stop them doing the phobia! It works quickly and permanently. I employ it all the time with my clients and then I tell them to go out and do the thing that used to cause the issue.

NLP is so very much more than this and it’s really tricky to explain easily and succinctly, the way I customarily describe it is NLP is the study of the mind and emotions to work out how you construct your reality or map of reality and how do you do what you do. When you know this you may then start to change how you believe, feel at a subconscious level to change the way in which you behave, believe and feel! From this you change your behaviours to get what it is in your life that you really want.

NLP is the pursuit of excellence!

In the last article I discussed Preferred communication style or in NLP terms Representational System. So I imagine I should go over this in some detail to clarify what this is before moving on with other topics of interest.

This is of interest in hypnotherapy as it can indicate where the problem may lie with an issue with a client, for example with quit smoking hypnosis if the client is visual the pictures the customer creates may hold the answer to letting them stop smoking easily and quickly.

How we think or represent the world and our thoughts are a combination of four ways using our representational system this includes. Visual (V), Auditory (A), Kinaesthetic (K) and Auditory Digital (Ad). Visual is the thinking in images/pictures, Auditory is the thinking by talking to one self within, Kinaesthetic is thinking usually with emotions and feelings, and Auditory digital is the preference of thinking in your head in ideas that are not real or of the senses and is equivalent to talking to yourself. We also communicate in these methods also.

So what do we mean by communicating visually, auditory, kinaesthetically or Auditory digitally well it is extremely simple folk use different predicates in making sentences. For instance
Visual – see, imagine, clear, bright, view appear. Show.
Auditory – hear, listen, sounds, query, saying, loud.
Kinaesthetic – feel, touch, grasp, get hold of, catch on.
Auditory digital – sense, experience, understand, think, perceive, know.

So for instance a person may communicate by saying something like:
Visual – Are you able to see what I’m trying to say and can you imagine how this looks like when your talking?
Auditory – Are you able to hear what I’m trying to say and does this sound like what takes place when you are listening while chatting?
Kinaesthetic – Are you able to grasp what I am trying to say and does this feel like something that you can get a hold of when you’re chatting?
Auditory digital – Are you able to understand what I am saying and are you able to sense how this might work in this process of speaking?

We use all these different systems to think and communicate and we’ve got a preference for one. For instance a Visual person will customarily create images to represent the world around them and to think, an auditory person will often speak with them-self a lot in their head to think about things. Each of these kinds of people may have a preference to think this way, this does not imply they don’t use the other ways of thinking in fact we all use them in different contexts and at different times it just means we’ve got a preference for one and where possible we employ it. We also have a tendency to learn best in our chosen representational style.

So this is of certain interest in hypnotherapy in connecting with the client and communicating with them, so with a visual person we’d then begin to communicate using visually predicates often and an auditory person mostly we communicate using auditory predicates. This aids in communication and understanding. Problems in communication can come from different peoples preferences communicating to other people with a different preference.

Shall we say a wife and a husband complain about one another and this is very familiar and well-known story.
She Asserts – He just can’t see how I feel if he probably did he would know to purchase me flowers.
He says – She just doesn’t listen or understand what I am saying I mostly tell her I love her.

In this example we have a Visual Kinaesthetic women is conversing with an Auditory, Auditory digital man. They are speaking 2 different languages and they’re not connecting properly. You may experience this when your out socialising and you can talk with and connect to some people and not others this is partly thanks to you having different representational systems.

There are different approaches to helping customer with hypnotherapy the 1st one is to treat the behavior. This entails the hypnotherapist using numerous scripts that are directed at changing the behavior of a client only! With out finding out the reason or root cause for this behavior. Now the scripts used are generic and they’re aimed at the overall population so they aren’t customised to fit the individual needs of the customer ie. Preferred communication style (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic or auditory digital), handling the real cause of the behavior etc. Due to this, the scripts are also subject to the bell curve, you remember from tests back at college you get graded on a bell curve 50% pass 50% fail etc the top is in the middle! Well guess what this is the same except it works best for customers in the middle. As you move further out to the sides it works less and less. Now this approach also often includes multiple sessions so you have got to go for anything from 2-6 session to get the result if you get it at all.

Do you believe if we treated a customer for the behaviour of booze problems and that was a total success! Then a year later I ran into them and they said they had not touched a drop since, but now they are doing cocaine! Do you think I achieved the right outcome for them? Technically I did because they are not drinking so I stopped the behaviour! But the explanation for the behavior is still there and it came out in a different way. So we are looking for the reason behind their behavior and remove that and not simply the behavior.

I’ve seen many clients who have seen other hypnotherapists for quit smoking hypnosis, drinking etc only to start to eat more or doing something else more to provide compensation for the missing behavior because the explanation for the behavior still exists and it manifests itself in some other way and now they are here to deal with that issue.

So another approach is where the hypnotherapist finds out the reason for your behavior in effect to get to the main cause of the behaviour and deal with this. Now here is where we split again as we have 2 kinds of hypnotherapists in this area who are seeking the same thing but looking in different places and tactics.
First one type may look into past lives or your childhood then may do some therapy. These strategies can be very esoteric in nature and in there approach to finding the explanation for the behaviour. This will require 2 or more sessions as well.

The final type is a NLP (Nero linguistic programming) Trained expert who will also need to know the real cause for the behaviour and they will take a more logic based approach. They may avoid your adolescence as an example, because well it is over and nothing can be done about it except removing the feelings they have anchored to the memory of the events, if this is indicated as the reason for the behavior. They’re going to look at stuff like emotional triggers, beliefs etc. They will also work out how they client essentially creates the issue. For example do they create pictures of seeing them-self feeling sorrowful, anxious or failing at something etc then maybe speak to them-self in a corresponding tone of voice, asserting some thing like “Im sorrowful, you do not deserve to be ecstatic etc”. Then they could think “Im useless, I cant be bothered going on, it is just not worth it”. This is all influenced by the sub-modalities used! For instance the sound of their voice might be annoyed, gloomy, anxious which then facilitates them feeling like this. There are several different mixes of how this works and we are all individual on how we put it together. This kind may take 1 to 2 sessions customarily.

So the question is what type of hypnotherapist would you like to see and what is more fitted to you and your belief structure?

In the last article I talked about in NLP terms sub-modalities. So I thought I should go over this in some detail to clear up what this is before moving on with other subjects of interest.

Sub-modalities are the details which make up the representations of our thoughts as I have talked about in the previous article on Representational Systems. Lets put this in context let’s imagine you’re a smoker, your a visual person and you want to quit smoking hypnosis. So we will be able to ask what do you see when your think about smoking and somebody may see them-self feeling relaxed smoking. So that the first point is they actually see an image of them self smoking and also feeling relaxed while doing it.

So now we will be able to ask the person the following question to elicit the sub-modalities of the image.
Where is the image located? – front, front low, front right etc,
Is it black and white or color?
Is the image near or far?
Is it bright or dim?
What size is the picture?
Are you Associated (looking thru own eyes) or Disassociated (see self in the image)?
Is it focused or defocused?
Is it framed or panoramic?
Is it a film or still?
Is it 3D or flat?

We will also do this for Auditory, Kinaesthetic and Olfactory. clients use multiple representational systems to represent the world they are typically present to their favored one and once you ask the question for all the others systems the details will emerge. Sometimes you won’t elicit anything from one representational system or 2 still it is worth checking to see what comes out of the elicitation.

So now that we have this info what do we do with it well their are numerous things you can do with this info, I will concentrate on one which is manipulating the sub-modalities to create a different relationship to the initial issue. So lets go back to the smoking, we can make them change the sub-modalities to the opposite to see what happens and how this effects how they feel about the activity. As an example change the image to black and white or colour, move the image nearby or far, change the size of the picture, make the picture bright or dim for example. This can change the associated feeling of the activity! We will also do the same for Auditory, Kinaesthetic, Auditory digital.

By doing this we can change or remove the way that the person feels about smoking so that they can hate doing it as much as they used to enjoy it and this is more useful. If they like the activity and we would like them to hate the activity we can also elicit the sub-modalities of another activity they really dislike doing compare the two and transfer across the differences to make the activity of smoking the same as the activity they really hate.

We are able to sometimes eliminate a negative feeling or positive feeling that may be causing an issue with a someone thus solving the problem for them in the way that is more helpful for the client.

Dear Health Conscious Friend,
Using laser surgery to quit smoking is a not a new mode of quit smoking treatments. It has been around for quite some time and looks to make a long term run due to the availability of lasers.

In case you are wondering this treatment is totally devoid of pain. You really have to understand that the reason for which you continue smoking may be due the vicious cycle of stress that you are under. If your smoking is normally taken in at break times at the office or you just are feeling a bit edgy and need a smoke. First strive to examine what has gone on in your life to trigger your desire to smoke.

Many of you will notice that it is an endless loop. When your husband comes home in a sour mood and you feel the stress of his stress around the home. This may also trigger you to smoke.

Using laser surgery to quit smoking is operating on the premise that smoking and stress are common bed fellows. The two run together and feed off of each other. The use of lasers here involves a low intensity stream of light highly concentrated to pulsate at certain nerve points on the face, neck, back, and head. This pulsations are akin to what occurs when you have acupuncture treatments. This involves the use of lasers instead of needles.

The rap artist Snoop Dog has a reality television show on now. In one episode, he was under stress and wanted to get some relief so he went to the doctor. The doctor recommended Eastern type medicine complemented with Western based medicinal techniques. He tried Yoga and couldn’t adapt to that. But the caveat was when he went to the acupuncturist. You see he is completely phobic of needles. Even to the point of drawing blood. He nearly screams and panic sets in.

Now, if you enjoy an occasional cigar post dinner or are a social smoker, you are still running the risks of lung disease and damage to your body like you cannot imagine. So, this treatment is available to help you quit smoking as well as the chain smoker. All smoking is bad, no matter how few you think you have.

Hypnosis can be traced back over 4,000 years ago to ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians used to have sleep or dream temples where sick people were healed. These people were put into a trance-like state. Priests would use various forms of chanting to induce them into such a state. Healing would take place while the sick person was in that hypnotic condition. The priests used the power of suggestion to help the sick people obtain a cure for their illness.

Today, hypnosis is being used in many self-improvement categories like weight loss and hypnosis to quit smoking. It has also been used to control certain habits like bed-wetting and thumb-sucking in younger patients. Hypnotherapy is fast becoming popular because it doesn’t involve drugs and has no serious side effects.

Hypnosis is defined as an altered state of consciousness that is usually achieved with the help of a hypnotherapist. A person under hypnosis is usually characterized to have intense concentration, in extreme relaxation and has high suggestibility. Many people believe that hypnosis is also a way of accessing repressed memories, multiple personalities, mystical insights or memories of past lives.

Hypnosis is also used as a therapeutic technique to help gain control over one’s behavior, emotions or well-being. Hypnotherapy also has the potential to aid in the relief of symptoms associated with different health conditions. It’s typically used together with other treatments like quit smoking hypnosis techniques with a combination of herbal supplements.

The most common hypnotic techniques are fixed-gaze induction or eye fixation, rapid progressive relaxation and imagery, and loss of balance. The fixed-gaze induction or eye fixation method involves getting the subject to focus intently on a single object and tune everything else out. The subject is lulled into relaxation as the hypnotist talks to him in a low tone.

The rapid technique is done by overloading the subject’s mind with abrupt, firm commands. A forceful command coupled with a convincing hypnotist gets the subject to surrender his conscious control over the situation. Stage hypnotists usually use this method.

The hypnotic method mostly employed by psychiatrists is the progressive relaxation and imagery technique. The hypnotist’s slow, soothing voice gradually lulls the subject to complete relaxation and focus until full hypnosis is achieved. This method is most often used in self-hypnosis training, relaxation and meditation audio tapes. The loss of balance technique uses slow, rhythmic rocking to create a loss of equilibrium. This method is used in putting babies to sleep.

Proponents of hypnotism view it as an important tool with a wide range of applications. For one, hypnotism can be used to reverse bad habits. Hypnotherapists may suggest ways that subjects may use to attain specific objectives like controlling or stopping cravings related to smoking cessation. Negative patterns of behavior may also be addressed through psychiatric hypnotherapy. If is particularly effective in problems related to phobias and fears. Law enforcement people can also benefit from hypnosis through forensic hypnotism wherein a subject’s deep memories are brought to the conscious level to aid in the solving of crimes. Medical hypnotherapy is also viewed as a useful tool. Hypnotic suggestions are used on patients to ease pain and cure illness.

Hypnosis is considered a complementary and alternative treatment and should be done under the supervision of a trained hypnotherapist. Poor techniques may lead to headaches, dizziness and nausea.

Hypnosis has been proven to help with many medical conditions and it is an effective treatment alternative to drugs. People use hypnosis to stop smoking and to lose weight. Those are the most common applications. Other people turn to hypnosis to overcome their fears of public speaking and other phobias.

Hypnosis works with psychological problems and helps relieve the blockages in the mind we have over certain things such as depression and anxiety.Hypnosis can help you get rid of negative thoughts of low self esteem and worthlessness. It has no side effects as some depression medications do.

On the lighter side, pun intended, there is weight loss hypnosis. People go in to a hypnotherapy session or get a weight loss hypnosis CD and get rid of some of the limiting beliefs they have about losing weight. If you have trouble staying motivated to workout and eat healthy, hypnosis can help retrain your brain to work out more often and eat healthier.

The same situation applies to stop smoking hypnosis. You need to reform different thinking patterns and relearn that smoking is bad. You can get lung cancer and die if you keep smoking. You are not only hurting yourself but your loved ones and you need to stop smoking. You can go to a hypnotherapist or get a stop smoking hypnosis CD and retrain your brain to get you to stop smoking.

There are many applications for medical hypnosis and hypnotherapy. It’s not just for the TV shows that show people being hypnotized and making them do funny things, you can use it to improve your life. You can use hypnosis to help you with many of life’s problems and do it without drugs. This will help you have a better life and it doesn’t hurt one bit.
