The nitrate can be obtained from a hardware or drug store. Before you start anything be sure you have flame-proof gloves, a nose filter and goggles. These will protect your hand, your eyes and your lungs. For additional protection, you should be wearing a thick, long-sleeved shirt. 

Grind the nitrate and sugar into fine powder

Using a mortar and pestle, grind the nitrate separately from the sugar. If you combine them while grinding you may trigger an oxidation reaction which can set off the bomb prematurely and while you are grinding at that!

When done grinding, combine the nitrate and sugar with some bicarbonate in the proportion mentioned above; 5.75:3.75:5.

Prepare and detonate the bomb

Get an empty soda can with its lid removed. Pour in the mixed powders. Use a length of cotton string which has been soaked in lighter fluid as your fuse and drop one end of the string into the can with the other end sticking out.

The fuse should be long enough to give you ample time to distance yourself.

Choose an open area to detonate the bomb. Prop up the can on a fire-proof and strong surface, away from dried leaves and paper. Light the fuse and run a distance away from the bomb.

Ping-pong ball smoke bombs

Probably the easiest smoke fireworks to make is the ping-pong smoke bomb. All you will need for this are 5 ping-pong balls, a long stick, some aluminum foil and a pointed knife.

Prepare the bomb

Cut out a hole at the top of one ball. The other balls you have to cut into little pieces that will fit into the hole in the first ball. Drop in the pieces as you cut them. Get your aluminum foil. Stick the long stick into the hole and wrap everything in the foil. Pull out the stick. That should leave you with a long strip of foil that you can use as your fuse.

Detonate it

To set it off, simply light the foil. When it starts to burn well, distance yourself from the ball and watch the smoke come out of it.

Word of caution

Never forget to wear your safety gear when using smoke bombs. Additionally, remember not to grind the saltpeter (potassium nitrate) and the sugar together. Saltpeter is a reducing agent and sugar is an oxidizing agent. Friction and the heat that it causes may ignite the bomb while you are preparing it.

In general, don’t attempt to use any other chemical explosive but potassium nitrate. The other types are extremely flammable and will need a lot of experience and training to handle. Potassium chlorate can create a life-threatening explosion if used without caution.
