How To Watch Less Television
Television. Love it or hate it, almost everyone watches television. Hours and hours of it
Quite a lot of people would prefer to watch less television if they could work out how to. Consciously or just as background noise and flicker.
There’s a reasonable chance that if I came up to you and asked you to tell me about the program you have just seen, you would be able to give me at least an outline of it. But what about the programs you watched yesterday? Or last week? Hmmm. Maybe not.
So how can you stop yourself turning into that couch potato?
Here are some easy tips to watch less television.
1. Use the standby button
Eek! Turn the television off? In some households, the thing stays on 24 hours a day. But if you’re on your own and you’re not really watching the TV, it’s just “on”, then pluck up the courage to hit the off switch.
2. Diarize with yourself to watch the important shows
Chances are that there are some shows you really “must” watch. Maybe it’s Kiefer Sutherland saving the world (again) in 24. Or possibly there’s no way you want to miss the next instalment on how those desperate housewives are coping. It doesn’t matter what your decision is, it’s good. You can still watch those shows. Just not all the other stuff in the intervening hours.
3. Turn off the news
Another big issue for a lot of people. But if anything really happens, you’ll hear about it soon enough. Most all the year, watching television news is merely a reason for wallowing in other people’s suffering. Cut that negativity out of your life and gain back the extra hours every week.
4. Get a television hard disk recorder
Record the programs you want to watch. Then relax and watch them, but with the remote control close by to race through the endless “coming soon” trailers and advertisements. That will free up around 20 minutes in every hour of television you would have watched. Trust me, this is an easy and useful habit to get into.
5. Use hypnosis to help
Yup. This really does work. Simply listen to a special hypnosis track to help you watch less television and you’ll quickly find yourself thinking of different things to do. Ones that don’t involve watching hour upon hour of television.
