How to Avoid Those Winter Blues
As autumn comes to an end and we move into the winter months many of us start to feel those old winter blues. It has been estimated that as many as 75% of us all experience feelings of depression and fatigue when winter comes around.
Luckily there are many simple steps that we can take to banish those winter blues.
More Daylight
Research has shown that Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD (sometimes called winter depression or winter blues) is actually caused by reduced exposure to sunlight. It makes sense to try and get as much daylight exposure as possible.
If you work in an office always try to take a walk in the daylight at lunchtime. Even when the winter weather is at its worst. Wrap yourself up and go outside to get more exposure to real sunlight.
Another easy fix is to replace all of your lamps and lightbulbs, at home and at work, with natural, full spectrum lamps.
Positive Visualisation Techniques
Positive visualisation is an incredibly powerful technique that can profoundly influence the way we feel. Try taking some time each day to imagine the whole of your body being illuminated from within. Don’t just imagine what it would look like, imagine how it feels. This can be incredibly beneficial.
Try to be More Active
We naturally become less active when the days get shorter and the weather turns colder. Fight this inclination and actually increase your physical activity each day. If you use a gym add some exercises to your routine. If you enjoy walking then do it a little more or a little faster. If you drive to work try doing a few isometric exercises whenever you are stopped in traffic.
Whatever you do in your daily routine there is always room for a little more excercise.
