Then, confuse him. It sounds strange but make him doubt what you agreed with. If he said, “My job stinks” and you said, “Yes, it does,” now say, “But there must be something good about your job you’re just not thinking of.” He’ll probably argue and insist there’s not.
That’s fine. Confuse you friend by agreeing with him more. Say, “You’re right. Your job really stinks. Staying with that company that pays you more than your last job and gives you great health insurance is pointless.” You’ll get a reaction out of him then. He might even debate you–the pay and the insurance are actually very great.
Perfect. Now push your friend one step further. Tell him, “Yep, to keep working there is stupid. You’d better quit.” Be sincere. That’ll get his attention and confuse the heck out of him. Didn’t you just say there were good benefits at his job? What do you mean–quit? YOU are wrong!
This is when you use suggestion to seal the deal. Say, “You’re right, my friend. Your job is valuable and you seem very grateful to have it.” And he will be.
