Careless and Abusive Drinking, an Enabling Wife, and Encouragement for Constructive Change and Successful Alcohol Abuse Rehabilitation

It took quite a few years but Emily at long last made up her mind that she had it with her husband’s excessive and unhealthy drinking. She was weary from seeing Barry come home after midnight from drinking instead of spending time with her and their two sons. She was also tired of the DUI Barry recently received. Additionally she was drained from making justifications for her spouse when he couldn’t make it to work on a regular basis due to his problems with drinking. In a similar manner she was apprehensive about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Barry’s excessive and hazardous drinking. And finally she was weary from the shaky financial jam into which he had placed his family because of his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior.

When Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Beneficial About an Individual’s Problem Drinking

One Monday morning when Emily was reflecting on what she could do about her husband’s careless and abusive drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something to cut into the harmful cycle of Barry’s hazardous and excessive drinking behavior.

So she looked on the web under “alcohol treatment” and discovered more than a few rehabilitation facilities that were all located less than 30 miles away from where her husband and she resided.

Due to the fact that she didn’t know a lot about these treatment facilities, she eventually decided that she needed to call some of them and ask some important questions. When she called each rehabilitation facility she identified who she was and stated that Barry, her spouse, was exhibiting unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her spouse had a top-rate health insurance program at his place of employment and that inpatient or outpatient alcohol abuse rehab would be covered if a health care professional in the company health program recommended the rehab.

At one rehab clinic, Emily was stunned that she was able to communicate directly with a doctor who suggested that she come to the rehab clinic to describe her husband’s unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior in much more detail.

Emily Talks to a Therapist About Her Husband’s Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking

When Emily got to the rehabilitation facility, she filled out some necessary paperwork and then almost immediately got to see a healthcare professional.

After listening to Emily discuss her husband’s careless and abusive drinking, the counselor in an encouraging but resolute way told Emily how she probably contributed to her spouse’s abusive and hazardous drinking through the years by minimizing his drinking behavior rather than allowing him to suffer the results of his abusive drinking behavior.

Emily Finds Out She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Excessive and Irresponsible Drinking

Stated somewhat more forcefully, the physician stated to Emily that she may have been unintentionally enabling Barry’s unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior. The doctor also emphasized the fact that while Emily would not be able to control her husband’s conduct, with the guidance and encouragement of the treatment team at the rehabilitation center she would not only be able to learn how to refrain from contributing to Barry’s negative drinking but she would also be able to learn how to help him make an appointment at the rehabilitation facility so that he could go over his abusive and careless drinking behavior with a physician.

The good news was that after Emily explained this to Barry, and he saw that she was not joking, Barry told her that he had been extremely concerned about his excessive and careless drinking behavior and that he was somewhat pleased to know that Emily wanted to do something beneficial about his excessive and abusive drinking behavior. As a result, he scheduled an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol treatment facility.

Barry Agrees to Meet With a Doctor About His Careless and Excessive Drinking

While simply calling a rehabilitation clinic does not ensure that an individual’s abusive and careless drinking behavior will become less problematic or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one manifests will simply go away, scheduling an appointment is certainly a vital aspect in the rehabilitation process. And since Barry was serious about getting help for his drinking problems, the probability for a successful recovery was considerably enhanced.
